Maine Episcopal Summer Chapel Tour: St. Martin’s in the Field, Biddeford Pool

Wayne and I visited St. Martin’s in the Field in Biddeford Pool for the 11:00 a.m. service. Although we have never been to the chapel I have been to the area many times before because it’s in the same neighborhood as The Marie Joseph Spiritual Center. The church is literally in a field (which is a golf course on one side) as the name denotes. Like all of the others we have visited, it is charming, welcoming and has beautiful stained glass that you MUST see! The sermon by Rev. Dina van Klaveren (pictured above) was very inspiring.

The view from the field.

Another view: A happy dog rolling in the field.

A comfy bench in the shade was appreciated.

The Rev. Klaveren talked about reversals in our lives and the lives of others; the kind of change that is life-altering and takes us on a completely different course. Our kindness and generosity can inspire a change of heart in someone troubled who previously did not know what it means to feel hope. We also have our own courses on which we’ve set sail and staying the course is not always healthy or good for us. By praying for guidance and being open to the help we need to make changes we can be an active participant in charting our own reversals of what might feel like destiny. We can go into reverse but first we must know it’s an option.

I hope you have enjoyed our tour! In a few weeks I’m going to post a summary of our tour along with some thoughts from Rt. Rev. Stephen T. Lane, IX Bishop of Maine! We had a delightful conversation about my experiences and yes, we did discuss that thing I didn’t see coming. I have a new perspective that I look forward to sharing with you!

About our 2017 Maine Episcopal Summer Chapel Tour: Wayne and I plan to visit numerous seasonal chapels in Maine. I will be sharing our experiences here on Serene New England. You can see all posts related to the tour here. I hope you will enjoy them and would love to have you share your thoughts in the comments!

  1. My husband and I were also visiting yesterday at the 11:00 am service. My husband is a big fan of Morning Prayer and our beautiful Grace Church in Norwood, MA doesn’t usually do Morning Prayer. This was a real treat for him. Wish I could remember what the piece played for the prelude is called. The organist told me but did not write it down. I’d love to know because it was beautiful.
