Good news! The inside fan of my baby/old lady Buick sedan* has been replaced so I have heat and a working defroster! The fifteen minute ride over to the dealer for my service appointment? That was an experience. It was sunny and 29 degrees outside. Wayne took the afternoon off from work so that he could follow me in his Subaru and then give me a ride home in case the service department didn’t have the parts in stock. We also ruled out beforehand that it was not a blown fuse. (I learned how to change a car fuse!) He of course offered to drive my car for me and I’d drive his but I knew I could handle it. It ended up being a bit more interesting than anticipated, though!
I started working at Carburs kitchen in Burlington Vermont in August of 1977. Little did I know then, that for the next 12 years I would become completely enmeshed in the company and in the restaurant business.
After working in Burlington for almost two years, the opportunity to become part of the management team in Portland came up. I jumped at the chance with the caveat expressed to ownership that as soon as a position became available in Burlington, I would be allowed to move back. As irony would have it two years later I was asked to return to Burlington, but Portland, by that time had become the place I wanted to make my permanent home.
Averyl asked me if I was willing to share what my daily diet used to look like and how it is today along with my “before” pic on her blog. I cut alcohol out of my diet when I got sober almost six years ago. I admit that I’m shy when it comes to talking about myself like this but she pointed out that it can help inspire others.
We went to a candlelight service on Christmas Eve and had a white Christmas followed by a burst of sunlight. Wayne also opened some surprising gifts.
We’re getting a nasty rain and wind storm tonight and tomorrow. Presently there are still some colored leaves on the trees, tomatoes on the vines and Chippie’s health is stable.
I’ve had some rough days since my last post, but I’ll start with the more upbeat stuff. The photo above is of Wayne looking rather tiny in contrast with the big colorful trees in our woods.
Wayne and I took a road trip to visit with some friends who live in Richmond, Vermont. We spent the afternoon in Burlington where I lived for three years while in graduate school in the 1990s. It’s hard to believe that it’s been twenty years since I was last there! Wayne also went to University of Vermont and managed, then co-owned a legendary restaurant (to Burlington and Portland, Maine locals), Carbur’s. We did not ride in the play VW Bus pictured above which was at Ben & Jerry’s in downtown Burlington.
The Vermont foliage wasn’t peaking the way it is in Maine and parts of New Hampshire, but we saw so many beautiful and interesting things:
Finally we have some spectacular foliage! Wayne and I took the scenic route to Ossipee, New Hampshire where we had breakfast at a local diner. It rained on the way over but the sun came through on our way home. Here are some of the colorful sights from our drive.
I received a special delivery this week: Ten pounds of organic Concord grapes from a friend’s garden! I have been wanting to make a Concord grape pie for at least a year now ever since I came across two very intriguing vintage recipes in my old cookbooks.
